This evening sees the Gerrards Cross Summer Festival from 5pm till 8.30 pm. Though not as big an affair as the Feast of St Peter (24 June), GX will this evening host music and festivities, free food and drink and other giveaways, plus entertainment for children, and the shops all along Packhorse Rd and Station Rd will remain open until 8.30pm. The atmosphere should be pretty lively.

In addition, there will be book signings by two authors at Gerrards Cross Book Shop. Do pop in for nibbles and a chat and, whilst you are there, why not pick up a signed copy of 'Buckinghamshire Spies & Subversives' as a Father's Day gift?

i went but lots ofplaces that had advertised free Food were actually closed, didn't offer anything not even for money like the fishchips shop  always charging for  only a very small cone of fries, the princely sum of  £1. ! however, at the Jordans fete this weekend, I spoke to and had fun with Brian Connoly who was walking about, accepting to have his photo/Selfie taken with ..ladies

Yes, it's no competition for our Feast Day. The surprising thing about the GX Summer Festival, though, is how poorly it is publicised. Many commuters coming from the station were surprised to find it was on. There are a few celebs in GX who might have come along and supported it. GX is a real 'dormitory' tho. Many residents seem to sleep there but work and socialise in London. The book shop was well packed out with customers, though, looking for Father's Day gifts, in particular.   Looking forward to Feast Day on 24 June.

it's sad that fewer and fewer people buy books though conference  hall at Merchant Taylors' school was very full of people coming to see and hear Charismatic  nick Clegg.
5 years ago i saw a bookshop in sunninghil Ascot  close down to open as designer clothes shop for  toddlers, teens  and teenagers. it  is doing well but not that well. recently owner has  even tried giving away Free books  as 'gift' with every obscenely overpriced miniskirt . maybe premises  should have stayed as  bookshop

We had a very successful book shop in Chalfont St Peter - Chalfont Books - though it closed down a few years ago, not because of lack of business, but because the owner, then in his 90s, wanted to retire. It is now The Bread House café run by Gold Hill Baptists. The GX Book shop and its sister shop at Chorleywood are still going strong and its owners and staff are highly pro-active, running the annual Chorleywood Literary Festival as well as many other author events.

Statistics show that people still prefer physical books and that e books are a supplement to, not a replacement for, the real thing.

Children's books are more in demand nowadays than ever before, and the choice of children's authors is growing. You may notice that in many branches of Waterstones - which has a different carpet design in it's children's areas than in it's adults sections - they have expanded the children's sections. You can see by checking out the expansion beyond the 'children's carpet'!

Independent book shops are flourishing, however, not least because they often offer many books you won't find in chains like Waterstones. Their managers are not constrained by the book chains' reliance on selling only likely 'blockbusters' for big and fast profits. The Indies offer a personal service to customers, offer local themed books and support local authors, and can produce a book you order within 24 hours - faster than Amazon. It is rare to find GX book shop empty of customers.

i considered  posting  about that but worried i might get bullied , bullied againb by 1-2 women .  Off topic,  a friend went to a "literary " event   where  "celebrity" Nik or nick Powel  showed slides  on his  'merits'  him  sleeping with  underwear-challenged sandy shaw. who didn't she  sleep with in the swinging sixties and after?to "make it" as an" artist". he also boasted about  ie  piggy backed  on ,  the fame  and real success of richard branson who was ie might have been, his mate. what was shocking was that Film School nick 's career-slides  were full of spelling mistakes. I felt  sorry for the Literary-fest  audience having to hear his empty  talk and see misspelllings-ridden slides and for £10. a ticket

I, too, was at that talk. It wasn't what I expected.

people bought some books then and learnt some spelling 50 years ago. now, half a century later, our youngsters don't do anything of the sort but might even consider  going  not just to glasto but  Hay "literary " festival to hear another showbiz/media "personality"  some washed out  loose "actress"  like cosmetic-surgery-very-modified  "talented"  liz harley boast about her "Cultural " achievements"   i.e.  not being able to spell,  but to sleep around very quickly and young, with celebrity , rich  or   powerful men.
My friend wanted  to bet that nick's  daughter is already "working"  in the same field. if it's not the sugar-daddy it might be your own daddy helping you "make it"  even when you or him, cannot spell, cannot write your own language, but know people and  Party { drug, sleep with , make illicit Money , drink or gossip}  with certain people!
The surgeon gents i recommended in  the other message,   might want to help their own kids, but their   daughters do know { do need to know} how to operate on patients ie do a real  job and  do it well .
