Can anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced person who cuts hedges? I have a laurel hedge which just spans the front width of the house, so not miles long, but the quotes I've had so far have seemed excessive to me. My arthritis now makes it tricky for me to do it myself. I'd be grateful for any recommendations. Ta.

I had a father and son team do mine.I cant help you with any names as i cant for the life of me remember what their names were but what i will say is negotiate!! I got them down £70 off the price they quoted me when they did my hedges about 2 months ago. They ll try and charge what they think they can get away with, especially round here.

Thanks Roy & Dave. I had a quote from a Portuguese chap who was cutting a neighvbours hedge and he quoted me £150 as he said he has to pay to dump the hedge cuttings, tho his van was already full of the neighbour's clippings, so I wouldn't have thought he'd have to pay twice for that. Since I've always done my own in the past, I wasn't sure if this was a fair price or not.

put the cuttings into your green bin and let the council take it, otherwise your pay twice!

don't let em use this as a excuse,it's peanuts, your hedge cuttings weigh about 20kg.

All I can add is that laurel hedges are a 'pig' to cut so I am not surprised that the quote is on the high side.

Work on the basis that he'll charge £100 to £150 a day, minimum charge to allow for getting there, doing the cutting, clearing up and then the round trip to the dump.

By the time he travels to you, does the job, travels to the tip etc. etc. it's probably good valaue (you'd pay £50 minimum per hour for the garage to fix your car for example)

Because he's trade he'll need to pay to dump waste whereas you can do it for nothing as a householder.

he's not charging £150 a day, he's charging £150 for 1 hours work!
as for the rest, oh wow, sweeping up and disposal and some diesel.
i could understand it if the hedge was 100ft long and 30 ft tall.
Laural hedges are easy if you have a 2 stroke.
as for comparing garages, those guys have to spend 3 years at college to do that job and they are worth every penny.

Thank you Rich Kid. I certainly would be interested in his contact details. When I was able to cut the hedge myself, it didn't usually take me longer than a couple of hours at most, and I'm happy to put the cuttings in my bin, even if it means holding half of them back for the following week.

If someone charges an hourly rate it is in perhaps in their interests to make sure the work is to a perfect standard as this may well up the amount of time the job will take.

At the end of the day, you need to convince yourself that the price they will charge gets you what you want in terms of service and the overall end result.

You may be fussy where you may want to pay for an hourly rate or you may not be which means you may want to consider a fixed price job.
