That shouldn't make any difference, Crackerman because:

1) It is a statutory bank holiday in the UK and therefore you are entitled to it as you are based in the UK ( or double time etc etc)

2) The USA is still a Christian country and Good Friday is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar so I would expect American companies to have the day off too.

Masterfoods (Mars) are American and all the UK associates had Good Friday and Easter Monday off as normal. Associates based in France had French bank holidays etc etc; such is the law of the land!

Nope. Neither is a public (Federal) holiday in the US.

http://www.opm.gov/fedhol/2007.asp - http://www.opm.gov/fedhol/2007.asp

However, being in the UK, you should be able to observe this holiday as it is a religious festival, not an arbitrary Bank Holiday, if memory serves.

My understanding is that this was changed a couple of years ago? I believe that everyone working full time hours is now entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks paid holiday, with statutory bank holidays on top. If people choose to work them they are entitled to extra money/extra holiday but the point is they have a CHOICE not to work them now, as per Sundays.

Yes i agree apparently you have a choice in a "regular" job, and other jobs where you have to work bank holidays then the days are added to your annual leave enititlement.

No, that's incorrect. Everyone is now entitled to 20 days holiday a year minimum. There is no law requiring companies to give you the day off on Bank Holidays however.

From the DTI website ( http://www.dti.gov.uk/employment/bank-public-holidays/faq/page18878.html - http://www.dti.gov.uk/employment/bank-public-holidays/faq/page18878.html )

Does this entitle employees to a holiday?
No. However, in many parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, bank holidays have become widely observed. Employees' terms and conditions of employment therefore commonly include entitlement to a holiday on those days. In Scotland, although bank holidays are observed in the banking and financial sector, they have less general significance; the public and business community in Scotland tend instead to observe various local and traditional days.

What rights do employees have on bank holidays?
Any right to time off or extra pay on bank holidays depends on the terms of an employee's contract of employment. Even when entitlements of this nature are not explicitly written down, they may sometimes be incorporated by custom and practice (for example, where they have become part of the customary terms of employment in a particular industry).

I think that this is the answer to the bank holidays' point - here is the DTI's press release of 11 January.

Six million workers set to benefit from extra holiday entitlement

Jim Fitzpatrick, Employment Minister, today announced the Government's proposals to increase workers' holiday entitlement from 20 days per year to 28.

New research has shown that up to six million workers would benefit from an extra eight days holiday each year under the plans. Some employers currently include the eight bank holidays as part of workers' 20-day annual leave entitlement (pro-rata for part-timers).

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is launching a second public consultation on the implementation of the changes. Statutory annual leave entitlement would be increased in two stages, rising from 20 to 24 days on 1st October 2007, and from 24 to 28 days on 1st October 2008.

Research by the DTI found that groups standing to benefit most from the changes include women, part-time workers, low-paid workers and workers from minority ethnic communities.

The move would protect vulnerable workers and allow reputable companies to compete on a more level playing field with those companies that give employees only the minimum of holiday entitlement.

Thanks BarnOwl - I think that's where I got the idea from that everyone was now due a min of 4 weeks holiday (20 workdays) with the statutory 8 bank hols on top.

I know that lots of people work bank holidays but I don't think working for a US company automatically means you miss out.

I discovered Chester today....wow, lovely! Would highly recommend it for anyone in this part of the world

 - Really beautiful town centre with lots of original black and white buildings
 - River, with tour boats, rowing boats, motor boats and pedaloes (and ice creams)
 - Cathedral
 - Roman walls that you can walk on, round the town, roman amphitheatre in mid-excavation, original hypocaust system and Roman gardens
 - Great shops (oh dear...absolutely no money left on credit card now)

And outside, the zoo, a aquarium etc etc.

Going back on SaturdaySmile

Crikey, Pierre! That's neither random nor mundane!

Sorry to hear that. Hope you get custody of the dog.

I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems scary and weird.

Do males lick out creme eggs too, or is it just us girls?

Coz to be honest, licking out a creme egg could be quite educational for some of themTongue

Angry I have recently used Next Directory for the first time...and probably the last.

They promise Next Day Delivery (and charge too) but this is not always available in my area. So they give me a delivery day 3 days after my order and then the goods turn up a day early, while I'm out!

Then I try and return goods within their 10 day approval time (again, I have to pay extra for this service). I ring and book a pick-up slot from their courier (Thursday). So my goods sat out all day yesterday. When I rang them (at further cost) yesterday afternoon, to say the goods were still here, I was told to wait till the morning.

So I ring them again this morning (again at further cost) and they apologise and say the courier will be here today. So the goods sit out all day again and surprise, surprise, they are still here now.

So I ring them for a third time (at yet further cost) and am told they "will investigate and get back to me". I am supposed to be in when they call...they can get stuffed! If I'm in fine; if I'm out, tough!

Has anybody else used Next Directory? Are they normally like this?

Just like eating ice cream really. If you don't get your tongue licking all around and on the cornet, it goes everywhere!
