Dear Forum,
Reporter Sean O'Hare here. Thinking about starting
a column similar to the one Sarah used to write
when she was here. It would report on my attempts
at dating the opposite sex. Anyone out there that can
suggest local places/opportunities for this to happen
, please get in touch.
Sean.

Well this puts me of the advertiser straight away. As a reporter, can you not come up with a big bright idea of your own, Sarah, done it read the book, stared in the video, oh please come up with something witty and random of your own, even if its what you ate for breakfast last week and what you think the following week will hold. Sean get a life

I get fed up with newspaper columnists detailing their private lives.  Is this what sells newspapers these days?  Well, not to me as I rarely buy newspapers.  For heaven's sake there are blogs for this - for those who really want to know - rather than wasting trees.

I say keep private lives and work separate.  Or bore your work colleagues!

I appreciate your responses, despite them being on
the negative side. Yes, Sarah did write a similar
column but what you fail to realise is that mine would
be from the opposite side of the track. A
twenty-something boy (bearing in mind we are trying
to attract the younger generations to buy) writes
about difficulties finding time and opportunities to
meet similar aged girls. If you read the paper you will
also realise my style differs wildly from that of
Sarah's. By writing her column under the holistic
heading 'life and stuff', would you not agree that there
remain very few subjects to be explored - unless,of
course, you wish me to perhaps investigate the
possibility of life after death, of which I can assure
you I know even less about than love. Helen, maybe
I will take up your idea and write about my thoughts
on the coming week. We are here to serve you, so
any other topics you would like to see discussed in a
column, please let me know. Sean.

Now this is interesting. One of the first bits I read of a newspaper are the
columns.
I always loved Julie Burchell because even if she annoys me, she makes
me think.
My weekend starts with Zoe WIlliams and Jon Ronson.
For me columns are light relief. I enjoyed writing mine, but was equally
glad when it was over and never really stuck with the brief anyway.
More bouquets than brickbats from the public too, which was nice.

As long as something is funny and offers from light relief then why not.
That's what the arts and entertainments section is for after all.

Best of luck Sean.

I rarely buy the Advertiser - too little news, too many houses for sale that are unaffordable.

I'm still not convinced that columns about the writer's personal life are relevent in a newspaper.  Ok, Sarah, so it is in a different section so maybe my idea of arts and entertainment are different.

Sean says "bearing in mind we are trying to attract the younger generations to buy" so perhaps I am just too old.

Think about the national newspapers you read, do you avoid the columns
in there too? Clarkson's great (when I read him)

A newspaper is a balance of news, entertainment and life. All national
newspapers have columns, red top tabloids, mid market tabloids and
broadsheets. After all, each publication has to cater for the wide and
varied interests of its readership.

In recent weeks I've been greatly amused by a letters page discussion in
The Guardian Weekend about a particular recipe in the food section which
offended some readers. Further readers have gone on to say they weren't
offended by the recipe, but find World Cup coverage offensive.

You can't please all the people all the time, but in the entertainments and
arts section to try to entertain, and inform about entertainments.
The Guide isn't just a 'column', but a multitude of pages designed
coverage to appeal to as many people as possible.

Just look at last week's - film, theatre reviews, food, gardening. I'm sure
some people don't like it, just as some do. It's a case of trying to please
most of the people, most of the time.

I'm not a reporter any more, and I'd just like to add my comments are my
own opinion and should not be considered the opinion of all journalists.

Not enough news.... hmmmm..This one always brings out a reaction in
me.. as when I was a reporter I spent my 50+ hour working week
generating news.
Once I challenged members of this forum to say what they thought the
Advertiser wasn't covering.
After being given a list of issues I came back half an hour later with a list
of dates and page numbers where all these stories had been covered and
were continuing to be covered.
Journalists aren't psychic..but hard working and extremely productive. It
takes a special kind of person to be devoted to the job. Anyway.. just my
personal view.. unofficial.. etc.

Each to their own and all that.

Perhaps there is too little news that you are interested in, rather than too little news? As for unaffordable houses, is this the Advertisers fault?! Crikey, I didn't know they set the house prices round here.

I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems scary and weird.

I always thought the Advertiser was rather informative, the housing section is a pull out.

Does your column need to be specifically about looking for love? How about broaden it to a "week in the life of a young local"

Jessama, you are certainly not too old to offer your
opinion. Sadly, it would seem that not enough
youngsters buy our paper, so, in a bid to boost
readership across the age groups, we are busy
thinking of ways to entice the 16-30 crowd. Our aim
is to involve/reach out to the community as a whole.

Hi Rob,

I live in West Drayton so unfortunately I don't qualify
as a local. We have already discussed this in the
office and agree that I wouldn't be able to offer a
realistic critique of life for a 24-year-old in the village
if I don't actually live here.
Thanks anyway!
Sean.

you need to be careful you dont have the opposite effect, the demographic of CSP leans very much towards the older person. If not many 20-30 year olds live in the village it will be very difficult to have stories which involve them.

I gather that Winkers has put in a planning application to build housing on their land.  Cover that, and the future for Winkers, and you'll get the youngsters reading the paper.

I think it would be good for the paper and its readers to get a perspective from someone who lives outside the bubble, from my POV a column solely based around CSP would be a little dull. (I'm a 25 year old living in the local area and most of the interesting stuff that happens to me occurs outside the local area). I would definitely be interested in reading an anecdotal column written by someone with whom I can empathise regarding the issues young twentysomething professionals are facing.

So all us Yummy-mummy's are 40 plus are we?? NOT!!

The demographic USED to be to the older generation but that is now changing with more and more younger families moving in as the older bods move away or depart this mortal coil. With its access to the London and the motorways, this is considered a younger, executive person's area place now (although house prices are tough)

i agree moggies-  ! all yummy mummies are not 40 plus!!!!!!

as for input for the bucks ad, what about this forum,  and the increasing popularity of it, what about the newly about to be released chamber of commerce website, these are accessible by locals and both sites have information for locals, - there are plenty of silver surfers as well as youngsters out there with web access. they are great local resources...

there are lots of little bits of local news/ goosip/ ramblings of a madman/  coming up... you may be covering these anyway.... but here goes...

there is the forthcoming st peters players production, what about a lights camera action  fly on the wall type thing on the work that goes  into these productions.....

what about the work of the local businesses do to support the village.... support for the locsal events and business like integra sponsoring the school fayre.... a ' public' pat on the back i think would not go a miss...and covering the fayre and the work of the school....

and i agree with others the changing face of architecture in the village its a topic we cant help but be affected by..... it affects everyone, those who live in the village, locals who visit the village and people coming from far afield coming into this area...has anyone else noticed how the bigger houses on packhorse road are all being demolished to make way for loads of flats.......then there is gossip regarding plans to build at winkers, holy cross, and other areas in and around CSP.,

what about the current situation with regard to the NSE ? , are they going to upgrade the accomodation for its residents...like we were told they MUST do to comply with the care standards... how much did they spend on their planning application... money that could have gone towards the care of their residents - money that some local residents may have given in raffles and charitable donations......?

what is happening to the proposed developments at criss grove, the 2 propoerties at the end of the road have now been under application for redevelopment...... looks like the 'parking spaces' that go with these homes would easily convert into site access for potential future development on the playing fields at the back of criss grove...

would be great to have an update on the tesco tunnel  fiasco once the HSE report is public.....what actually is happening.......

juvenile crime in the village...... plenty to write on there....

rising spates of petty vandalism and drug taking in CSP........

what about  how the hosepipe ban is affecting  csp, are local buisnesses losing out, - is it affecting trade ?- hlelen has already pointed out that the recent spate of power cuts has made it tough to run her business, , Garry Bree has also pointed out that freezers and foodstuffs are ruined when the power goes off....... it must be tough for local business who rely on water for their business to continue if water  rationing is imposed.....i am sure some of the fossils down at the CSP gardening club will give you a quote !

all abit random and interesting to different levels and members of the locality but input all the same.....

I think it ought to be pointed out the Advertiser isn't just CSP's
newspaper. It covers 80 per cent of South Bucks, and the southern part of
Chiltern District.
There's loads of news in it, especially when you remember it's
essentially written by three people. When I was there we were never...
EVER short of stories to cover.

The Advertiser used to be online when I first started working there Tobic
back in 2000, but was taken offline either at the end of that year or in
early 2001 (I can't quite remember) when it was taken over by Trinity
Mirror.
It might be worth asking the editor Julie Voyce how likely it is to go back
online, but considering it's been about five years off now, I doubt the
powers that be will let it happen.. but you never know.

Shouldn't this topic really be in Chat To The Bucks Ad?

Well, I LIKE THE WAY THE ADVERTISER IS MOVING FORWARD, BUT HOW DO YOU GET 18-30 YR OLD BUY THE PAPER BECAUSE ,LETS FACE IT ON A THURSDAY MORNING DO THEY WAKE UP AND THINK, OH MY GOD ITS THURSDAY I MUST GO OUT AND GET THE ADVERTISER!¬!!, the computer unfortunately says NO NO NO, if you want that audience you must first offer them something in return ie; i really dont know maybe a beauty compeion over a 3 month period, a mr hunk or who is the fittest boy in the village( also accomodates 40 plus peverts of both denomination)

Going back to the original post, it sounds like Sean is trying to get the Bucks Ad to pay him to chat up the local girls. Nice work if you can get it although perhaps "looking for love" is probably not an apt description! .
