It rains
The village naturally floods causing traffic disruption, damage to property and loss of trade. No-one is responsible, no-one is rebuked, fired or identified. We just have to put up with it. Why??

And yet we keep grumbling and paying our over inflated council tax and voting for the same old mob.
Go figure!

What with plagues and floods, do you think someone up there is trying to tell us something?

What this
means in simple terms is that the local drainage is inadequate. Whether this is
the design of the system or (more likely) lack of maintenance is unknown. The village
floods readily, as does the A413, creating mini lakes that block carriageways and,
in this weather, turning to sheet ice. This has been a hazard for many years
and no-one has the impetus, know-how or basic interest in solving it. Homeowners
and businesses are left to get on with it and no-one blinks an eye to help. Sending
down workers to prod the drains after a flood is useless
in the extreme. Perhaps clearing the drains before a
crisis? I see a
previous comment about drain clearing in minor roads, and the observation that
the drains were silted up. Perhaps if they were cleaned regularly, they wouldn’t?
Also, why clean drains in Joiners when all you do is aid the flow downhill to ….er….
the village centre? Is there anyone in the Parish Council who can take this forward to our terminally useless Local Authority / Highways Agency? Does anyone
have the contact details of Jackie Weaver? |

As I recall they ran into all sorts of problems when they built the A413 bypass due to groundwater levels as the Rever Misbourne is a chalk stream meaning that ground water levels are really high naturally. It therefore doesn't take much to cause a lot of surface water. along there.
Looking at the photos from the Bucks Free Press all of that water wold have flowed straight into the ford in the 50's.

For those
still concerned about road blockages and inconvenience, the following may help.
Bucks CC are responsible for roads, gullies and footpaths; this includes maintenance
and clearance. It also goes somewhat towards explaining why there is a discharged
firework lying in the gutter of my road since last November. Go figure. Thames Water
are responsible for sewage pipes and, presumably, the maintenance as well. Apparently
these two Authorities converse with the Parish Council, but seem to do little
of any real action other than look bemused every time it rains.
Do remember
this if you are a little miffed with untreated sewage entering your business
uninvited, don’t relish a paddle to get your shopping, or even try to insure your
premises against flooding. I don’t know if the local MP knows of this? This may
be the next route. |

Thanks Malcontent, yes Bucks CC, the Parish don't do highways. As Art said of course the river has historically flowed into the ford and this road has always flooded while I've lived here. This occasion has been the longest closure that I can remember though. Is there any news when it'll be reopened? Can't find anything on the internet. I feel so sorry for those business affected.
