STATEMENT ON THE ARROWCROFT DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL
FOR THE HOLY CROSS/ GRANGE SITE “The Parish Council of Chalfont St Peter has been monitoring issues relating to the Holy Cross/Grange site since the convent school closed in 2006. The Parish Council is faced with a situation where a development that it believes contravenes existing planning policy and the wishes of residents is being foisted upon the village. That is why the Parish Council has challenged the existing Grange/Holy Cross outline planning permission in the High Court. It believes that the Arrowcroft plan strengthens the case for challenging the existing decision. The Arrowcroft alternative clearly fulfils the needs and wishes of the village as outlined in the village survey of 2009 by putting a school on to the site and keeping the number of dwellings down to 100. It also adds a supermarket as a key element of its viability. The Parish Council fully supports all of the elements of the Arrowcroft proposal that are also supported by the village survey including the School Academy, the sports fields, the improved access, the lower housing numbers and the preservation of the Grange building and the trees. Since the village survey did not ask about a supermarket the Parish Council is not in a position to comment on behalf of residents in this respect but Arrowcroft has made assurances that it will hold a full public consultation on this issue taking into account the views of both traders and residents. The Parish Council believes that an appropriately sized supermarket in the heart of the village would make it more likely that residents would carry out their shopping locally which would enhance the vitality and vibrancy of the village centre. Any consideration of the Arrowcroft plan should of course be seen in contrast to the existing planning permission. This would fill the centre of the village with high density housing and inadequate traffic controls, yet provide no new facilities for Chalfont St Peter, paying only lip service to the provision of community facilities and historic assets- through the retention of a modern chapel- whilst destroying trees, the Grange building, sports facilities and a precious educational site. This is a crossroads for the future of the community of Chalfont St Peter and the Parish Council hopes that residents will take the time to consider the choice in front of them very carefully. Chalfont St Peter cannot stop and should not wish to stop progress. This is a unique opportunity for the residents of Chalfont St Peter to have their say on the future of their Village. It is important, therefore, that the residents respond to the Arrowcroft consultation “ John Hatton- Chairman, Chalfont St Peter Parish Council |
