Bucks mobile library wins top awards A mobile library service that visits rural and urban areas in Buckinghamshire, has won two top awards at a national mobilemeet competition. Bucks Mobile Library 2 (BM2) was voted best mobile library and hailed state of the art by judges and attending delegates at the annual Mobilemeet awards in Matlock Derbyshire. The awards bring together the best mobile libraries throughout the UK. The new 11-metre long mobile library is environmentally as well as customer friendly. Fifteen solar panels in its roof generate the power to run the on-board electric equipment for most of the year. Eco-friendly materials have been used in the construction of the vehicle, which is fully insulated and uses low-energy fluorescent lights. The vehicle also features a retractable canopy along with an outside sound system and lighting The vehicle also scored well on staff facilities with its own toilet, hot and cold water, microwave and cool box. In addition, a recently installed tracking system allows customers and the County's contact centre to check if the vehicle is operating and running on time on any route. The vehicle was designed by Buckinghamshire County Council's Mobile Operations Manager Steve Skidmore, in conjunction with the counties fleet management department and Leicester Carriage Coachbuilders. Steve said: "I'm delighted we won the two top awards and I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all involved with the design of the vehicle at Fleet Management and Leicester Carriage Coachbuilders." The Mobile is not a Hybrid, the solar panels power the electrical systems on the vehicle via its storage batteries, keeping them fully charged at the same time. These can then be used to back up the solar panels if required. Martin Phillips, Buckinghamshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Engagement said: "This is excellent news for our mobile library service. These awards recognise the important role mobile libraries play in our local communities. They deliver a much needed and appreciated service, particularly to young families, the elderly and those who live some distance from a local branch." |
