This year, St George's Day falls on a Saturday, so keep an eye out for some fun things going on in the village, including Dragon Tales - children's themed story time at the library in the morning.   Please note your diaries and keep an eye out for notices.

Most of the St George's Day activities will be taking place between 10 am and 2pm. The DRAGON TAILS STORYTIME at the library will be run in 3 sessions, commencing at 10:30, 11:30 & 12:30 and there will be dragon pictures to take home to colour in. GURNING CONTEST: each of the local pubs is to field potential champions of the art of gurning (ugly face pulling), so sign up now at your local. The competition will be judged at around 12:30 in the precinct [the prize is a substantial amount of beer].

Local shops will hold a best dressed window competition, so look out for dragons. Car parking in church Lane car park will be FREE. The party will continue into the afternoon up in Horn Hill, as the Landlord at THE DUMBELL Public House is offering DISCOUNTED DRINKS from 2 till 6; a FREE British Bangers & Burgers BBQ from 2 till 5 and LIVE MUSIC (by Ekkie) from 4 pm onwards. Watch this space for news of further activities and attractions. Commemorate St George, patron saint of England, Portugal and a number of countries; patron saint of Guides & Scouts, and symbol of the triumph of good over evil. Wear something red & white and come join in the fun.

We'll be there for the library and have been gathering a few friends to go up the Dumb Bell in the afternoon. Does anyone know if the bouncy castle will be up.

Maybe we should have a Chalfont forum meet up up there.

Not sure about the bouncy castle, but the landlord of the Dumbell is generously funding his musician, Ekkie, to come and serenade us in the village around lunchtime too. I don't frequent pubs very often but last time I was in the Dumbell, with a group of several families who'd been out for a New Year's Day walk, the food was superb, and plentiful, considering it was a bank holiday. I have heard a few people say that the food there nowadays, under the new landlord, is equally superb. I think I'll have to make it a regular Sunday lunch venue, especially as it's such a nice walk up to Horn Hill. It's a funny old year, this one, with Easter, St George's and the Royal You Know What happening all in the same weekend, but it'll be interesting to spot dragons, fluffy chicks and commemorative wedding stuff festooned about the village! Have a great weekend everyone, and come on down to the village to make merry.

The gurning competition will be judged at 1230 in front of the church on their patch of green.

Anyone named George, who'd like to be introduced to the Community by The Town Crier on St George's Day, just approach him on the day. There were 3 men named George who died for their community in World War 1, by the way.

Just to remind of this Saturday's arrangements: free parking in Church Lane car park; the event will be opened by the Town Crier from the top of the church tower, at the parish church, in which you can view the 18th century stained glass window depicting St George & the you-know-what; children's story time sessions in the library at 10:30; 11:30 & 12:30 (children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent, all to be collected promptly by 1pm when library will be closing); there will be face painting by girl guides; 12:30 will see the judging of the gurning contest by The Vicar; The Village Bobby & Beaconsfield's Town Crier; best dressed shop window competition, live music and sunshine has been ordered!
