Aggravated Distraction Burglary – Chalfont St Peter

Police in Chalfont St Peter are urging people to be on their guard after a spate of distraction burglaries in the area.

In the most recent incident an 83-year-old woman was grabbed and thrown onto a chair by an offender who had used a distraction technique to get into her house.

The incident took place between 2.50pm and 3.09pm on Monday (03/10) at an address in Pennington Road.

The offender knocked on the lady’s door and told her he was from the water board. Then he pushed his way into the house and turned the taps on in the kitchen. He let himself out into the back garden and tried to convince the woman to go outside with him.

She would not follow him and he went back inside the house, grabbed her by the arms and threw her down onto the chair. The woman screamed and the offender ran out of the front door.

Although nothing was stolen during this incident and the lady was not injured, she has been left shaken by the ordeal.

The offender is a white man, about 19 or 20-years-old, around 5ft 8ins or 5ft 9ins, and of medium build. He has short, very thick, dark brown hair which was worn to the side, and his complexion was very pale. He was dressed in beige.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact investigating officer PC Janine Richardson at Chalfont St Peter on 08458 505 505.

The incident is not unique, and recently other techniques employed by distraction offenders in the area have included going house to house on the pretext of asking the occupier if they need any gardening work doing.

Regardless of the ruse used by the offender, the message from the neighbourhood officers and crime advisors remains the same; don’t let anyone in your house if you are not certain of their identity.

There are precautions you can take to make sure people calling at your house are legitimate, and residents are urged to employ the ‘Stop, Chain, Check’ steps before letting anyone into their house and have appropriate locks, chains and spy holes fitted where appropriate.

Crime reduction advisor Mike Levine said: “Do not always take people at face value and please do not be afraid to question who or why they are visiting your home. Even then, if you are not happy, then do not invite them in.

“Door chains or door bars should always be used when strangers come to the door, as they prevent callers from pushing past and into your home. If visitors cannot be seen from a window then a door viewer is useful. It is advisable to keep the back door locked so that an accomplice cannot sneak in that way – these types of callous criminals often work in pairs.
“These offenders also regularly pose as officials from a utility company and sometimes they pretend to be awarding a prize. Whatever the explanation for their visit it is important that you never let anyone into your home if they are not expected, even if they display identification. If they are genuine they will understand.”

“The water board no longer exists so if someone calls at your home claiming to be from this organisation, don’t let them in. It would be unusual for a representative of any of the utilities to call without first making an appointment, and anyone who does call unexpectedly should always be checked out before being allowed in. If the caller is genuine, they will understand why they are not allowed into the house without a check call being made first.

“It is also advisable to check on the identification someone provides, take it and look at it carefully. Close the door and call any organisation involved if you are not sure. You can find the numbers you need in the phone book or on your last bill.”

Even if someone suspicious calls at your home, but doesn’t come inside it is important to contact the police immediately on 999. Distraction burglars will try and trick their way into several homes before they strike and will not stop until they find a potential victim. The information you provide will help police to build up a clear picture of the offenders and bring them to justice. A call from the public could prevent someone becoming a victim.

Mike added: “If any work needs to be undertaken on your home then it is always advisable to do so on a recommendation rather than deal with people seeking to carry out work on your doorstep.

The “STOP, CHAIN, CHECK!” message urges residents to:

• Stop and think before opening the door
• Use a door chain before opening the door
• Check for identification

And if you have any doubts do not let them in!

I've just read the article about this in the Advertiser. The poor victim had
the right idea and knew he wasn't right, shame she didn't have the
physical strength to keep him out.
Hope he's caught.

The penalty for aggravated burglary is generally more severe.

Lets hope he gets more than a supervision order when caught.
