A couple of my friends have brought some goods and had on the receipts two lots of VAT @ 17.5

one shown 17.5% from the total amount the other was a smaller sum ?

anyone know what the second one is for ?

Found out that it was the way they typed out the invoice...

They had printed the VAT on the goods and VAT on the postage and packing

but most companys simply show the VAT amount right at the bottom just before the total amount.
