(geek alert! ) We have the daughter moving back home and she needs to use her laptop in her room. We have cable broadband stuff and I would like to set up a home network thingy or be able to run two 'puters from one incoming cable. There is a tv and cable box in her room already, will there be a load of hassle and that grumpy little sod from NTL coming back into my house? (if you have met him you will know the guy!! ) So what is involved? and is it cheap? Help!

One wireless router and a USB wireless adaptor is all that's required.

I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems scary and weird.

What you need is a router. I have installed several systems like yours but using ADSL not cable. With Cable there are some quirks (is it NTL round here?). It assumes that there is only one device i.e. one computer connected. A router solves this problem. Please note that the one one on Ebay does not appear to be suitable. You do NOT want an ADSL router. What you probabaly need is a wireless router. Strangely enough I had a spare one here until last Monday. This product is the right version for you from a supplier I have used regularly. Not too different in price from Ebay! There are other products available from other suppliers. http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=F5D7230 This includes a USB wireless "dongle" if needed. The cost is likely to be around £30 to £60 ish depending on whether you want to go wireless or whether you can run a cable to the other location and whether the new computer supports wireless or not. It is easier be specific with advice with more detail i.e. where is everything located, can cable be run, does daught's computer have a network card, does it have a wireless interface etc. It is not too dificult to install if you have some computer knowledge. If you are not sure it might be wise to get some help. I will repeat the plug for the local self help group The Gerrards Cross computer club www.gxcc.org.uk where there are a number of experienced members for advice. I will send you a PM with my contact details. Edited by steelej |

It's a free country, adopt whatever PC stance you want. Just don't tell me which stance I should take just because it clashes with your opinion. |
