Almost a forgotten word now - 'fishmongers'! Anyone remember Botts the fishmongers in Market Place just down from Robertsons the butchers? I believe Eric Stone, a rather rotund figure of a man used to be the manager, had two sons, Ian and ?. Botts of course also had a shop in GX.

Ian having lived in Chesham for many years moved 2 years ago to Yate in Somerset, Barry now lives in Devon and Neil also lives in Devon.

Yes, I worked there, Saturdays, around 1957, I think............. Pay was 7/6 for Saturday mornings, extra 5/- if Saturday afternoon as well. Taught me how to fillet fish and dress a crab, lol Always gave me a couple of fillets of smoked Haddock or Cod to take home for Saturday tea, lol

tobic, its a good skill to have,
so many people have no idea how to fillet or prepare fish ! i too spent my student days working for a fish wholesaler near billingsgate, - we used to prepare fish for hotels and restaurants , i dont think there is a fish i cannot sort out !!! those were the days.....

Yes indeed, I fish a fair bit here in Western Australia and the skills I learnt have really helped to prepare them properly.
